Historic District Gateway

Medfield Public Safety

Medfield, MA

“… a quick note to express my gratitude for a job so well done! The project was perhaps one of the best I’ve been associated with in 20+ years in the design and construction business. We’ve received great feedback from the community in the design and it certainly is justified. The building came out great and it was virtually painless getting there.”

Mike Quinlan, Co-Chair, Medfield Permanent Building Committee

Personnel Health And Safety

For too long, cramped quarters and an adverse physical environment had challenged both the Police and Fire

departments in their undersized, outdated, and uncomfortable combined facility. Equipment storage competed with apparatus bay floor space, sallyport space was non-existent, detainee processing was unsafe, sleeping quarters cramped, and proper fresh air exchanges were inadequate without physically opening windows.

Future Considerations

D+W was retained to develop multiple design alternatives throughout the robust study period. Detailed user group meetings led to the program that met current needs but also looked to the future. The facility is large enough to accommodate anticipated growth within the community, which the voters strongly endorsed.

Historic Gateway

The building design reflects the character of the Town House, which houses the town’s administrative offices, in the historic district. Located on the north end of the district, the public safety building is the “gateway” to the town’s center welcoming visitors and townspeople alike
