Turn-of-the-Century Architecture Meets Modern Needs

D+W was commissioned by the City of Gloucester to study and develop design options for making the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library into a modern day cultural and educational facility fitting of today’s programmatic and compliance requirements. As part of this effort, D+W was asked to investigate potential options to include the historic Saunder’s House as part of the study and design. Saunder’s House contains a number of turn-of-the-century murals that would need to be preserved as part of the proposed renovation. Spencer, Sullivan & Vogt was retained to assist D+W as its architectural preservation consultant and a comprehensive review of this historic building was performed. The preservation of the Saunder’s House as functional office and gallery space is proposed to be connected to the library project as part of the final design.
