A Modern Hub for Learning and Community

Dr. Albert B. Consentino Middle School

Haverhill, MA

Placement of the new school allowed for continued use of the existing building during construction, improved site circulation and campus connection with the adjacent Silver Hill School, and improved site and building amenities for the greater community.

Consentino’s tradition as an agent for community building is maintained with its welcoming nature and a strategic public/private zoning configuration; the gymnasium, cafeteria, art and music rooms, and performance space are available for use by the public, community groups, and local partnerships (YWCA, United Way).  The media center and technology classrooms support before and after school programs and enrichment activities for the Discovery Program.

Each floor of the four-story academic wing houses a single grade level with dedicated offices, counseling services, and a variety of learning spaces, enabling stronger connections with peers and ready access to adult support. Resources are where the students are, minimizing travel between classes.  Grade level separation is achieved while connectivity for collaboration is possible via multiple, strategically located stairwells.

The student-centric design supports flexible teaching methodologies and instructional practices – whole class, small groups, individual work and project-based learning – while being mindful of the need to balance connectivity, transparency and privacy.

Traditional brick and large punched openings of glass are expressed in a contemporary fashion; the rhythm and pattern of fenestration reflect the buildings and storefronts of historic Haverhill while the main entrance and media center present a more contemporary design language.
