The Dore + Whittier-designed Northbridge Elementary School in Whitinsville, MA, has been awarded LEED-Sv4 Silver certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and an international symbol of excellence. Through design, construction and operations practices that improve environmental and human health, LEED-certified buildings are helping to make the world more sustainable.

“This project is a quantum leap forward for the quality of educational space in Northbridge, and will help educate the community about ways to be green in our everyday lives as well as providing lessons about green building to students,” said D+W Project Manager Tom Hengelsberg, AIA, LEED AP®. “It is a true community-use building that will get a lot of exposure to the wider circle of students, their parents, and other community members.”

The Northbridge Elementary School achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in areas such as water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Green school buildings give students, faculty, and staff inside them a healthy, comfortable space to learn, work, and play. Certification is proof that the building has been constructed and will be operated to a high level of sustainability.

“The work of innovative building projects like the Northbridge Elementary School is a fundamental driving force in transforming the way our buildings are built, designed and operated,” said Peter Templeton, president and CEO, USGBC. “Buildings that achieve LEED certification are lowering carbon emissions, reducing operating costs and conserving resources while prioritizing sustainable practices and human health. Because of the Northbridge Elementary School project team’s efforts, we are increasing the number of green buildings and getting closer to USGBC’s goal to outpace conventional buildings, while being environmentally and socially responsible and improving quality of life for generations to come.”
