A Responsive Civic Solution

Stoughton Fire Station No. 1

Stoughton, MA

D+W led a comprehensive feasibility study that included an evaluation of existing fire and police facilities, development of space needs, and assessment of 13 potential sites. Numerous renovation, stand-alone, and combined facility options were conceptualized and analyzed for addressing the town’s public safety buildings’ shortcomings, the potential for service delivery improvements, financial impact, and long-term efficacy. Ultimately, the first steps on the path forward reconstitute the fire service with a new operational-only Station #1 in a prime, response-time apropos location and with further modifications. The Freeman Street station is being renovated to become the new Fire Headquarters with an Emergency Operations Center and Public Health Services and Station #2 on Central Street will expand living quarters once the Administration offices vacate to Freeman Street.

With outdated, undersized and problematic facilities, and in response to the community’s growing needs, Town officials crafted a strong vision and a creative approach to the phased upgrades that was readily supported by residents.  The new 25,145 SF fire house on Prospect Street is a much needed and welcomed asset, designed for efficiency, durability, and comfort. Key features include five double-deep apparatus bays, a maintenance bay, 12 dorm rooms, a fitness area, and a kitchen/day room—supporting both the operational demands of the department and the well-being of its personnel.
