Newton North High School Newton, Massachusetts
Trip Elmore, while working for Turner Construction Company, was the Project Executive in charge of Owner's Project Management (OPM) services for the new Newton North High School, the Commonwealth's first completed LEED-for-Schools™ project. Dore & Whittier was the Architect of Record for the 412,000 sf project that includes 60 regular education classrooms, 16 science classrooms, 22 special education classrooms, career technical education spaces for carpentry, automotive, culinary arts, green engineering, and other specialty spaces; television studio, language lab, lecture hall and food service/cafeteria. The project includes a full sports facility consisting of an indoor track, a 12,500 sf competition gym, natatorium, wrestling room & dance studio, exercising room, 10 outdoor tennis courts, a stadium with a synthetic turf and 2,000 seats, assorted playing fields and 6 team lockers rooms. The performing arts component consists of a 600-seat theater with a full fly loft and a black box performance space. The Owner has received LEED™ Gold certification which makes Newton North the first school in the State to receive this designation. Prior to construction of new building, significant underground asbestos abatement was required, as well as, 80% of the existing 450,000 sf school required abatement during demolition.
This project was constructed under MGL Ch. 149A with a Construction Manager at Risk delivery method. This approach saved significant time, provided financial transparency into the cost, and contributed to a very successful project with no subcontractor claims.
